Cheaper Home Batteries Program: Secure Your Maximum Discount Before 1 May

However, a major change is coming on 1 May 2026. After this date, the rebate for larger batteries will be slashed, and the overall incentive will begin a permanent “step-down” every six months.

The time to act is now. To secure the highest possible rebate, your battery must be installed and certified before the May deadline.

Why the rush?

Up until 30 April 2026, the program offers a high, flat-rate discount based on your battery’s total capacity—roughly $311 per kWh of storage.

For a standard family battery (like a 13.5kWh Tesla Powerwall), this equals a discount of over $4,000.

From 1 May 2026, two major changes take effect:

  • The “Taper” Penalty: Incentives for batteries larger than 14kWh will be significantly reduced. Any capacity between 14kWh and 28kWh will only receive 60% of the rebate, and anything over 28kWh will drop to just 15%.
  • The Factor Drop: The base “STC Factor” (the multiplier used to calculate your cash discount) will drop by nearly 20%, meaning even small batteries will become more expensive to install.

Real-World Impact: Waiting until after 1 May could cost a household installing a medium-to-large battery (e.g., 20kWh+) upwards of $2,000 to $7,000 in lost incentives.

Am I Eligible?

To qualify for the current maximum discount, your installation must meet a few simple criteria:

  • The Battery: Must be between 5kWh and 100kWh and appear on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) Approved Product List.

With the 1 May 2026 deadline approaching, the Victorian market is seeing a surge in aggressive telemarketing and “too good to be true” battery offers. While most installers are professional, some non-reputable companies—often referred to as “rebate cowboys”—are currently targeting East Gippsland households to claim government incentives without providing long-term support.

Warning Signs of a Non-Reputable Installer:

Do I need to fill out government forms?

No. We handle the entire STC creation and rebate process for you. The discount is clearly itemised on your quote and deducted from the final price you pay.

What if my installation is delayed past 1 May?

The rebate is determined by the date your Certificate of Electrical Safety (CES) is issued. This is why we are urging customers to book their assessments early to guarantee a spot in our pre-May installation schedule.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?
